Pre-owned Steelcase

Used Steelcase Office Furniture

Steelcase furniture is built for long commercial service, which makes it a smart pre-owned buy. Here is what to expect on condition, pricing and warranty when you buy it from an independent reseller.

Designer office furniture

Steelcase is one of the names you see most often in corporate offices, and that is exactly why it shows up so often on the pre-owned market. When a company closes a floor, consolidates or refreshes, its chairs, panel systems and desks do not wear out on the same schedule as its lease. That furniture can go on to serve another office for years.

Buying used Steelcase office furniture is a good way to get commercial-grade construction at a lower price. It also comes with trade-offs you should understand up front, mainly around condition, matching and warranty. This page covers all three.

Buying from an independent reseller

Office Station sells pre-owned Steelcase as an independent reseller. We are not an authorized Steelcase dealer and are not affiliated with Steelcase. That distinction affects two things you care about.

  • Warranty. Manufacturer warranties generally do not transfer to pre-owned furniture. Plan your purchase assuming no manufacturer coverage.
  • Configuration. A dealer can order any current option. A reseller works with what came out of real offices, so exact finishes and quantities depend on inventory.

What you get in return is lower cost, much faster availability and furniture that is kept out of a landfill.

Steelcase categories on the pre-owned market

Steelcase makes a broad range, and not every category holds up equally well on a second life. Here is how the main types compare when bought used.

CategoryExamplesPre-owned considerations
Task chairsLeap, Amia, Gesture, Think, Series 1Check mechanisms, cylinders, arm pads and upholstery; see our Leap and Amia guides
Panel systemsAnswer, Avenir, MontageComponent completeness, panel heights and connector hardware matter more than finish
Height-adjustable desksMigration and similar sit-to-stand basesTest the full height range and motor function; confirm power cords and controls are included
StorageLateral files, pedestals, towersKeys, drawer slides and locks; request keys or plan a lock swap

For panel systems specifically, read the used Steelcase Answer guide before you order a count.

How condition grades work

Every pre-owned piece is graded so you can compare options without guessing.

  • Grade A, like new. Minimal to no visible wear. Choose it for executive areas and client-facing spaces.
  • Grade B, very good. Light signs of use. The practical middle for most general office seating and workstations.
  • Grade C, good. Visible wear that does not affect function. Ideal for training rooms, call centers, warehouses and budget-sensitive build-outs.

A grade describes appearance and function at the time of sale. It does not replace your own questions. If a specific detail matters to you, such as a fabric color, a stain on one arm or whether a desk base runs quietly, ask about that exact unit and request a photo.

Mixing grades is often the smartest move. You can put Grade A chairs in the conference room and Grade C in a back-office training space, and nobody will notice the difference where it does not matter.

What used Steelcase workstations cost

Workstations are where the gap between pre-owned and new is easiest to see. Here is Office Station pricing for a furniture-only 6'x6' workstation.

OptionPrice per 6'x6' stationTypical lead time
Liquidation-grade$615As little as 72 hours, in stock
Remanufactured$1,245Usually 7 to 14 days
New$1,9204 to 6 weeks

Average market rate Prices subject to availability and project pricing.

Prices exclude electrical, delivery and professional installation. Installation runs $95 per workstation with a $495 minimum. Greater Phoenix delivery is $195 central or $295 metro; freight elsewhere nationwide is quoted per project. Volume pricing takes 5% off at 20 or more stations, 8% at 50 or more and 12% at 100 or more.

On a 50-station project, the difference between liquidation-grade at $615 and new at $1,920 is $1,305 per station before the volume discount. That is a real budget decision, not a rounding error.

Before you buy used Steelcase

  1. Decide what matters most: exact match, speed or cost. You can usually optimize two.
  2. If you are adding to existing Steelcase furniture, send photos and measurements of what you already have.
  3. Pick a grade per area rather than one grade for the whole office.
  4. Confirm what is included, such as keys, power components, arms or casters.
  5. Assume no manufacturer warranty and ask your condition questions now.
  6. Take advantage of free space planning before you lock in a count.

Selling Steelcase you no longer need

If your office is on the other side of this equation, well-kept Steelcase can carry real resale value. Office Station gives a written net offer: resale value minus removal cost. Walkthroughs typically happen within 48 hours in Greater Phoenix and within 2 to 3 business days in other markets, with offers inside 5 business days. Frequently asked questions

Is Office Station an authorized Steelcase dealer?

No. Office Station is an independent reseller of pre-owned furniture and is not an authorized Steelcase dealer or affiliated with Steelcase. The Steelcase name is used only to describe the furniture being sold.

Does the Steelcase warranty transfer to used furniture?

Generally, no. Manufacturer warranties generally do not transfer to pre-owned furniture. Rely on the condition grade, detailed photos and your own questions about wear and function before you buy.

What do Grade A, B and C mean?

Grade A is like new, Grade B is very good with light signs of use, and Grade C is good with visible wear that does not affect function. Grades let you spend more where appearance matters and save where it does not.

How fast can I get used Steelcase workstations?

Liquidation-grade pieces in stock can be ready in as little as 72 hours. Remanufactured furniture usually takes 7 to 14 days. New furniture typically takes 4 to 6 weeks.

Can I sell my old Steelcase furniture?

Often, yes. Office Station gives a written net offer equal to the resale value of the furniture minus removal cost. If that number is positive, you are paid for the furniture.
