The Herman Miller Sayl stands out in a room. Its unframed suspension back stretches across a Y-shaped support, giving the chair an open, airy look that suits modern offices, meeting rooms and home workspaces. It is also lighter and simpler than some heavier executive task chairs, which makes it a practical choice for teams that share space.

A used Herman Miller Sayl chair gives you that design at a pre-owned price. The two decisions that matter most are which condition grade fits your space and how quickly you need the chairs. This page walks through both.

Know which Sayl you are buying

"Sayl" covers more than one chair. Before comparing prices, make sure you are comparing the same style.

StyleTypical useWhat to confirm
Work chairDaily desk seating, open-plan teams, home officesArm type, seat depth adjustment, lumbar option, tilt limiter
Side chairConference rooms, guest seating, collaboration areasArms or armless, base type, stackability if needed
StoolCounter-height and standing-height surfacesSeat height range and foot ring

Work chairs were sold with different option packages. Two Sayl work chairs that look the same in a photo can offer different arm adjustments or lack adjustable lumbar support. If an adjustment matters to you, ask before you buy.

Choosing an A, B or C grade

We grade every pre-owned chair on a simple three-step scale. All grades are working chairs. The difference is how much cosmetic wear you will see.

  • Grade A, like new. Little to no visible wear. Choose this for reception areas, executive offices and client meeting rooms.
  • Grade B, very good. Light signs of use, such as small scuffs on the base or arms. A strong everyday choice for most teams.
  • Grade C, good. Visible cosmetic wear such as marks or worn arm pads. Ideal for training rooms, back offices and budget-first projects.

The Sayl back is a stretched suspension material, so it is worth paying attention to on lower grades. A small snag in the back is cosmetic on some chairs and a comfort issue on others, depending on where it sits. When in doubt, ask about the specific chair.

Lead times: why in-stock matters

Speed is one of the biggest advantages of buying pre-owned. A new chair order can mean waiting on manufacturing and shipping. A pre-owned chair that is already on hand can often move much faster. Ask us what is in stock and when it can ship or be delivered for your project.

The trade-off is that pre-owned inventory is finite. Here is how to use that to your advantage:

  1. Lead with your count. Tell us how many chairs you need before you tell us the color. Quantity is the hardest thing to match.
  2. Name your flexible points. Would you accept two frame colors, or Grades A and B together? Flexibility widens the pool of in-stock chairs.
  3. Set your real deadline. Share your move-in or start date so we can tell you honestly whether in-stock chairs can meet it.
  4. Reserve once confirmed. Pre-owned chairs sell. When a batch matches, confirm quickly.

A quick inspection checklist for Sayl chairs

  • Stretch the back gently with your hand. Look for snags, tears, or areas where the material has lost tension.
  • Check the Y-shaped back support for cracks near where it meets the seat.
  • Raise and lower the seat several times. It should not drift down.
  • Recline through the full range and test the tension control and tilt limiter, if present.
  • Slide the seat depth adjustment, if equipped, all the way out and back.
  • Test the arms through every available adjustment and inspect the pads.
  • Roll the chair on a hard floor and check each caster.

Is a used Sayl the right chair for you?

The Sayl is a good match when you want a clean, design-forward chair with solid everyday comfort, or when the same chair needs to look right at desks and around a conference table. Its lighter frame also makes it easy to move between rooms.

If you sit for very long stretches and want the widest possible range of adjustments, compare it against heavier ergonomic task chairs before deciding. A fully optioned Sayl work chair covers most people well, but a basic configuration offers fewer ways to fine-tune fit. The honest answer depends on the specific chair and the person using it, so tell us how the chair will be used and we will point you to options that fit.

Warranty and who you are buying from

Office Station is an independent reseller of pre-owned designer furniture. We are not an authorized Herman Miller dealer. Manufacturer warranties generally do not transfer to pre-owned chairs, so you should not expect the original warranty to cover a used Sayl. Ask us what terms apply to your purchase before you order.

Furnishing more than chairs

If your Sayl chairs are part of a larger setup, you can plan the whole space at once. Our used cubicles come in liquidation-grade, remanufactured and new tiers with free space planning, and the pre-owned office furniture range covers desks, tables and storage. Build a workstation estimate with the cubicle quote builder.

Greater Phoenix delivery uses zone pricing, and freight anywhere else in the country is quoted per project.

Frequently asked questions

How fast can I get used Sayl chairs?

It depends on what is in stock when you order. Chairs already on hand can often ship or deliver quickly, so ask what is available now. If your count or color is not on hand, we will tell you plainly rather than promise a date we cannot hit.

Which Sayl grade should I choose for a conference room?

Grade A or B is usually the right call for rooms that clients see. Grade C chairs work well but show more cosmetic wear. Mixing grades by room is a common way to control cost.

Are used Sayl chairs covered by the Herman Miller warranty?

Generally, no. Office Station is an independent reseller, not an authorized Herman Miller dealer, and manufacturer warranties generally do not transfer to pre-owned chairs. Ask us what applies to the specific chairs you are buying.

Is the Sayl a task chair or a side chair?

Both exist. The Sayl family includes a work chair on casters, a side chair for meeting and guest use, and a stool. Confirm which style and which adjustments a listed chair has before ordering.
