The Herman Miller Aeron is built around a mesh seat and back, a sturdy frame and parts that can be serviced. That design is why so many Aerons from corporate offices are still fully usable years later. It is also why the used Aeron market rewards buyers who look closely.
Two sets of letters matter when you shop: the chair's size (A, B or C) and its condition grade (A, B or C). They mean completely different things, and mixing them up is an easy way to end up with the wrong chairs.
Aeron sizing: A, B and C
Unlike most task chairs, the Aeron is made in three frame sizes. The mesh seat does not compress like foam, so a chair that is too small or too large stays that way no matter how you adjust it.

A quick fit test: sit all the way back, feet flat. You should have a few fingers of space between the front of the seat and the back of your knees. Your hips should not touch the side frame. The backrest should support you up to roughly your shoulder blades.
If you cannot sit in one before buying, a size B is the safest default for an unknown user. For a team, collect heights and preferences first. Buying a few A and C chairs alongside a majority of B chairs usually beats forcing everyone into one size.
Generations and options
Aerons on the used market come from different product generations and were ordered with different options. Herman Miller refreshed the design in the mid-2010s, and the updated version uses a different mesh and adjustment controls from the original. Neither is automatically better for your purposes, but you should know which one you are getting, especially when matching a set.
Options vary chair to chair. Ask about each of these:
- Arms: fixed, height-adjustable, or fully adjustable with pivot and depth.
- Back support: an adjustable lumbar pad, a two-pad posture support, or no lumbar option at all.
- Tilt: tilt limiter settings and whether forward tilt is included.
- Base and casters: standard or polished base, and caster type for carpet or hard floors.
Condition grades on pre-owned Aerons
Every chair we sell carries a condition grade:
- Grade A, like new: mesh taut and clean, frame with little or no visible wear, all adjustments smooth.
- Grade B, very good: light scuffs on the frame or arms, mesh intact, everything works.
- Grade C, good: visible cosmetic wear such as arm pad marks or frame scuffs, fully functional.
For executive offices or client-facing rooms, Grade A is worth the difference. For a busy open-plan floor, Grade B usually looks the same to everyone except the person sitting in it.
What to inspect on a used Aeron
Whether you are buying from us or anywhere else, run through this checklist. It takes about five minutes per chair.
- Seat mesh: press firmly in the center. It should spring back without a permanent dip. Look along the frame edge for fraying or pulled strands.
- Back mesh: lean back hard. Listen for creaks and check that the mesh stays attached around the perimeter.
- Height cylinder: raise the seat, sit for a minute and confirm it does not sink.
- Tilt: work the tilt tension and tilt limiter through every setting. Stuck knobs or a tilt that will not lock are red flags.
- Arms: raise and lower them, and test pivot and depth if equipped. Check arm pads for cracks and peeling.
- Lumbar: confirm the lumbar pad or posture support is present and slides or adjusts.
- Base and casters: look for cracks at the base arms and make sure every caster rolls freely.
- Labels: check the label under the seat for model and size information where it is still legible.
The warranty question
New Aerons carry a manufacturer warranty for the original purchaser. Price your decision on the chair in front of you: its grade, its adjustments and how it passes inspection.
