Checklist: testing a used Haworth chair
This takes about two minutes per chair. On a large order, test a sample from each batch and spot check the rest.
- Cylinder. Raise the seat to the top, sit down firmly and wait a minute. The seat should not creep down. Then lower it fully and raise it again.
- Tilt and tension. Recline and return. Adjust tension from light to firm and confirm you feel the difference.
- Tilt lock. Lock the back upright and in at least one reclined position, if the chair has multiple positions. It should hold under pressure.
- Seat depth. Slide the seat forward and back. It should lock at each stop.
- Arms. Test height, width and pivot adjustments. Look for cracked arm caps and loose posts.
- Lumbar and back. Move the lumbar support through its range. On mesh backs, check for tears, fraying or sagging.
- Upholstery. Look for stains, tears and seam separation. Sit on the front edge, where foam breaks down first.
- Base and casters. Roll the chair on a hard floor. Casters should spin freely, and the base should have no cracks near the center hub.
- Noise. Squeaks and clunks during recline often point to worn mechanism parts.
