If your room is tight, you can shave clearance on a wall that nobody sits against, such as one with a credenza or display. Do not shave it on a side with chairs. A room where people have to squeeze past each other feels smaller than it is.
Shape changes the math
- Rectangular. The most seats for the footprint and the easiest to find pre-owned.
- Boat-shaped. Wider in the middle, so everyone can see each other and a screen at the end. Slightly fewer seats than a rectangle of the same length.
- Racetrack. Rounded ends soften the look and are gentler on hips in narrow rooms.
- Round or square. Best for 4 to 6 people in small huddle rooms, where nobody sits at the head.
Condition grades for conference tables
Pre-owned tables are graded A like new, B very good or C good. On a conference table, the top gets the closest look, since that is what everyone sees during a meeting.
- Grade A. Clean top with no noticeable scratches or edge wear. The right choice for boardrooms and client-facing rooms.
- Grade B. Light surface marks visible up close or under direct light. A strong value for internal team rooms.
- Grade C. Visible wear such as scratches, edge scuffs or small blemishes, but structurally sound. Good for training rooms, project rooms and break areas.
Surface material affects how wear shows. Laminate hides light use well. Wood veneer looks rich but shows scratches and water rings more readily. Stone and solid surface tops are durable but very heavy, which matters for delivery.
What to check before you buy
- Flatness. Seams between multi-piece tops should sit flush, with no ridge you can feel.
- Edges. Look for chips, peeling edge banding or dents, especially at corners.
- Base and connectors. Confirm all bases, brackets and connector plates are included. Missing hardware on a sectional table is hard to source.
- Power and data. Ask whether the power module, grommets and cable management are included, and test that outlets work.
- Height. Standard conference height is around 29 to 30 inches. Confirm it works with the chairs you plan to use.
- Weight. Heavy tops may need extra crew or special handling. Ask before scheduling.
Getting the table into your building
Moving a conference table is less like moving a desk and more like moving a slab. A few details make the difference between a smooth delivery and a table leaning in a hallway.
