What condition grades mean for bookcases
Every pre-owned piece is assigned a grade so you know what you are getting before it arrives. For storage, the grade mostly describes the surfaces. Structure should be sound at every grade.

What to check before you buy
Whether you inspect a piece in person or review photos, run through this list.
- Shelf sag. Look along each shelf edge. A visible bow means the shelf has carried too much weight over too long a span, and it will not straighten out.
- Shelf pin holes. Check that the holes are clean and not stripped or blown out. Damaged holes let shelves tilt or drop.
- Shelf and pin count. Confirm how many adjustable shelves come with the unit and that every shelf has four pins.
- Back panel. The back keeps the case square. It should be fully attached with no loose corners or cracks.
- Square and stable. The case should sit flat without rocking. Adjustable levelers help on uneven floors.
- Height and depth. Measure the wall, and check for outlets, thermostats, light switches and door swings that a tall unit could block.
- Anchor hardware. Tall bookcases should be secured to the wall. Ask whether anchor brackets are included.
Matching shelving to what it will hold
The biggest mistake with office shelving is putting the wrong load on the wrong shelf. A wide laminate shelf that looks fine holding a few books can bow within months under a row of full binders. Paper is heavier than it looks.
- Binders and dense paper. Choose steel shelving or shorter shelf spans, and keep the heaviest items low.
- Books and reference material. Laminate or veneer bookcases work well when shelves are not overloaded. Leave some room on each shelf.
- Display and decor. Almost any style works. This is where grade A veneer earns its price.
- Supplies and boxed stock. Steel units are forgiving and easy to wipe clean, and grade C is usually all you need.
