New, remanufactured or liquidation-grade

New Office Furniture: When It Is Worth It and When It Is Not

New office furniture is the right call for some offices and an expensive habit for others. Here is a straight comparison of all three tiers on price and lead time so you can decide with the numbers in front of you.

Pre-owned office workstations

When you search for new office furniture, most results assume new is the only option. It is not. For workstations in particular, you can choose between new, remanufactured and liquidation-grade, and the difference in price and timing is large enough that the choice deserves a few minutes of thought.

This page lays out the three tiers side by side, explains what you gain and give up with each, and helps you decide which fits your office.

The three tiers, side by side

All prices are for a 6'x6' workstation, furniture only.

Prices exclude electrical, delivery and professional installation. Installation is $95 per workstation with a $495 minimum. Greater Phoenix delivery is $195 central or $295 metro, and freight elsewhere in the country is quoted per project.

When new office furniture makes sense

New is the right tier when one or more of these is true:

  • You need a manufacturer warranty. Some organizations require it by policy. Warranties generally do not transfer to pre-owned furniture, so new is the clear choice here.
  • You need exact finishes or configurations. If your design calls for a specific fabric, laminate or panel height across every station, new gives you control over the spec.
  • Your timeline is long. With 4-6 weeks of lead time, new fits projects where the move date is well out, such as a build-out that is still under construction.
  • The space is client-facing. A reception area or client meeting floor may justify the cost of new furniture where appearance is part of the business.

When remanufactured is the better buy

Remanufactured workstations sit in the middle on price and timing. At $1,245 per 6'x6' station, you save $675 per station against new, and the usual 7-14 day lead time is short enough for most moves planned a few weeks out.

This tier works well for general office areas where you want a consistent, professional look without paying new prices. It is often where brands like Herman Miller, Steelcase, Knoll and Haworth show up, depending on availability.

When liquidation-grade is the right answer

Liquidation-grade stations at $615 are the fastest and least expensive path. When stock is available, they can be ready in as little as 72 hours. That matters when a lease falls through, a team grows faster than planned, or a temporary project office needs seats this week.

Expect honest wear. Pre-owned pieces are graded A (like new), B (very good) or C (good), so you can see what you are buying before it arrives. Browse current used cubicles and pre-owned office furniture.

What the difference looks like at scale

Per-station savings add up quickly. Here is furniture cost for common office sizes with volume pricing applied (5% at 20+, 8% at 50+, 12% at 100+).

100 (12% off)$54,120$109,560$168,960

Installation, delivery and electrical are separate. At 50 stations, installation at $95 each adds $4,750 regardless of tier.

A mixed approach

You do not have to pick one tier for the whole office. A common pattern is new or remanufactured furniture where visitors see it and liquidation-grade in areas they do not. Another is ordering liquidation-grade stations now to open on time, then adding new furniture later when the lead time allows.

Free space planning can lay out each area with its own tier and show the combined budget.

Checklist before you buy

  • What is the move-in date, and which tiers can meet it?
  • Does your organization require a manufacturer warranty?
  • Do you need powered stations, and who is doing the electrical work?
  • How many stations will you need in a year, and does that reach a volume discount band?
  • Is delivery inside Greater Phoenix zone pricing, or will freight be quoted?
  • Have you budgeted for chairs? See pre-owned office chairs.
  • Is there old furniture to clear? A liquidation net offer may offset part of the cost.

A note on brands and warranties

Office Station sells pre-owned designer furniture from Herman Miller, Steelcase, Knoll, Haworth, Humanscale, Teknion, Allsteel, Kimball, AIS and Friant as an independent reseller. We are not an authorized dealer for these manufacturers, and manufacturer warranties generally do not transfer to pre-owned furniture. If you have a specific requirement, ask before you order.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a new 6'x6' workstation cost compared to used?

A new 6'x6' workstation is $1,920, furniture only. The same size is $1,245 remanufactured and $615 liquidation-grade. All three prices exclude electrical, delivery and professional installation.

How long does new office furniture take?

New workstations typically take 4-6 weeks. Remanufactured usually takes 7-14 days, and liquidation-grade can be ready in as little as 72 hours when it is in stock.

Do pre-owned pieces come with a manufacturer warranty?

Generally no. Office Station sells pre-owned designer furniture as an independent reseller, not an authorized dealer, and manufacturer warranties generally do not transfer to pre-owned furniture. If a manufacturer warranty is a firm requirement, new is the tier to choose.

Is there a discount for larger new furniture orders?

Volume pricing applies at 5% for 20 or more stations, 8% for 50 or more and 12% for 100 or more. On a 50-station new order, that takes furniture from $96,000 to $88,320.

Can I combine new and used furniture in one office?

Yes. Many offices put new furniture in client-facing areas and remanufactured or liquidation-grade in team areas. Free space planning can price each area separately so you see the tradeoff.
