Most cubicle specifications are written around footprint and price. Neither is what people notice at 4 p.m. What they notice is surface height, monitor distance, whether the chair holds them up, and whether they are staring into a window. All four are specification decisions, and most cost very little if you make them before the install.

Worksurface height: the 29-inch problem
Fixed worksurfaces come at 29 inches from the floor, across essentially every panel system, new or used. That consistency is why components mix so easily. It is also a compromise sized for someone around 5'10" in shoes.
The consequence: a person at 5'4" who sets their chair so their feet reach the floor types with their shoulders raised, because the surface sits above their resting elbow height. Within a few hours that is neck fatigue. Either raise the chair and add a footrest, or lower the work. Three ways to lower it, cheapest first:
- Rehang the surface. Panel systems hang surfaces on cantilever brackets that engage frame slots in one- or two-inch increments. An installer drops a top to 27 or 28 inches in minutes, free at install time.
- Add an articulating keyboard tray. Keeps the 29-inch top for paper and monitors, puts the keyboard two to four inches lower with negative tilt.
- Specify a height-adjustable surface. Crank or electric base. The right answer for shared desks and documented accommodations.
You do not have to pick one height for the whole floor. Tell your planner which stations are shared, and hang the rest to fit whoever sits there.
Sit-stand retrofits on existing panels
You do not need to replace a panel system to get sit-stand. The panels carry privacy, power and structure; the surface is a separate part hung off them. That separation is what makes retrofits practical.

Catch one interaction early: an adjustable surface travels up past where overhead bins hang, so it wants clear panel above it. Monitor distance and height
Two targets. Screen about an arm's length away, 20 to 30 inches from the eyes and further for larger displays. Top of the viewing area at or just below seated eye level, so the eyes look slightly down rather than up.
Cubicle surfaces run 24 to 30 inches deep. Put a 27-inch monitor on a stand on a 24-inch top and the screen lands around 18 inches from the face. Too close, and the most common problem in a freshly installed floor.
That is why an arm beats a riser on a shallow surface. A riser only solves height. A clamp-on arm pushes the screen back over the panel line, recovers the surface underneath, and lets each person set height and distance. On dual monitors the case is stronger, because two stands eat most of a 6-foot top.
- Clamp arms to the back edge of the surface, not to a panel unless it is rated for it; panel mounts can pull the tile on lighter frames.
- Angle dual screens into a shallow arc, and put the primary one square in front with the second to the dominant-hand side. Split evenly across center and nobody looks straight ahead all day.
Keyboard position and corner geometry
Elbows at roughly 90 to 100 degrees, forearms close to level with the surface, wrists straight. That is the whole rule, and keyboard placement follows from it.
Where cubicles get it wrong is the corner. Most stations are L-shaped, and the inside corner is the deepest point, which makes it look like the place to sit. It is usually the worst: the person sits too far from keyboard and screen, and the corner presses the front edge into their abdomen if they pull in. Radiused corner tops help; hard 90-degree corners do not.
Seat the person along the longer leg of the L instead and use the return for paper, a phone or a second screen. That gives a straight edge to sit at, somewhere to rest the forearms, and a pivot to the side rather than a reach forward. A 6'x6' has room for it; a 6'x8' makes it easy. The chair is the highest-leverage purchase
If you change one line on the quote, change the chair. The surface is a flat plane at a fixed height. The chair is the only part of the station that adjusts to the person, carries their weight for eight hours, and either supports the lumbar curve or lets it collapse. Chairs quote as an add-on at $145, $245 or $395 per seat, in the same three grades as the stations. The number matters less than the comparison.
At the same price, a pre-owned or remanufactured premium task chair generally beats a new budget chair. The premium chair was built for multi-shift use and usually has adjustable lumbar, seat-depth adjustment and multi-axis arms. A new chair at that money typically has fixed arms, no seat-depth control, and foam that packs down inside a year or two.
The counterweight: manufacturer warranties generally do not transfer to pre-owned furniture, and Office Station is an independent reseller, not an authorized dealer of any brand. Pre-owned wins on mechanism quality and frame life per dollar, not on warranty.

Task lighting, glare and orientation
Stack-on overhead bins shadow the back half of the worksurface, which is where the monitor sits and where paper gets read. Ceiling light does not reach under the bin, so the person works in a dim pocket inside a bright room. That contrast is what strains eyes.
Under-bin task lights fix it cheaply. Two rules: mount the fixture at the front edge of the bin's underside so light throws forward onto the surface rather than down onto the screen, and pick one with a diffuser, because a bare strip reflects off a glossy top.
Orientation to windows matters more than the fixture does:
- Facing a window: the eye adapts to the bright view behind the screen and the screen goes gray. Worst case.
- Back to a window: daylight reflects off the screen. Second worst, and the one people fight with blinds.
- Perpendicular to the window wall: daylight comes from the side, the screen stays legible, the person keeps the view. Plan for this, and keep low panels on the window side with tall panels on interior spines so perimeter light still reaches the floor.
Clearance once a pedestal goes in
A mobile file pedestal is an easy add at $95, $145 or $245, and the most common cause of a cramped station. A typical one is about 15 inches wide and 22 to 24 inches deep. Roll it into the knee space under the primary surface and the room for a person's legs is gone. Plan it on the drawing:
- Leave at least 24 inches of clear width and about 20 inches of clear depth for knees under the primary surface.
- Park the pedestal under the return, and hang the CPU there too. That is what the return is for.
- Run power and data in the panel raceway and up through a grommet. Cables looped across the footwell are a trip hazard and the reason people sit sideways.
- If you raised a chair to fix a 29-inch top, the footrest needs floor space too.
Spending a fixed budget well
With a fixed number per person, spend it in this order.
- Chair first, one tier up from your instinct. The $145 tier to the $245 tier is $100 a person, $2,000 across 20 people, and it changes the day more than any surface decision at that money.
- Monitor arm second. It fixes height and distance at once and recovers surface, which sometimes means a 6'x6' does the job where you thought you needed a 6'x8'.
- Task light third. Small money, immediate effect, invisible next to the furniture line.
- Keyboard trays for the people who need them. Not everyone. Survey first.
- Height-adjustable surfaces last, and targeted. Sit-stand everywhere is the most expensive line on the page. Put it on shared desks and accommodations; hang the rest to fit.

Can you add a sit-stand desk to an existing cubicle?
Usually yes. Most panel systems hang their surfaces on brackets that drop into slots on the panel frame, so the whole surface can be rehung an inch or two at a time, or swapped for a height-adjustable base. How do I stop glare on monitors near windows?
Orient the workstation so the person looks along the window wall, not at it and not with their back to it. A screen facing a window washes out; a window behind the screen makes the eye fight a bright background all day. Perpendicular is the fix. Low panels on the window side keep daylight reaching the interior of the floor.
