Cubicle sizes are quoted as width by depth in feet, measured to the panel centerlines. The usable interior is a few inches smaller once panel thickness is counted, so a 6'x6' station gives you slightly less than 36 clear square feet.

Panel heights
Panel height changes how a floor feels more than footprint does. Heights vary by manufacturer, but they fall into three practical bands.

A common approach is to mix heights: tall panels on the spine between back-to-back stations, where they block the view and sound of the person behind you, and low or mid panels facing the aisle. Keep tall panels away from exterior windows so daylight still reaches the interior of the floor.
Choosing the right size by role
Start with how people work, not with how many you want to fit.
- Customer support and sales floors: 5'x5' or 6'x6' with tall or mid panels. Acoustic separation matters more than surface area.
- General administrative and professional staff: 6'x6' with mid panels. Enough surface for dual monitors and some paper.
- Accounting, design, engineering and legal support: 6'x8'. Large monitors, plans and files need the extra depth.
- Supervisors and team leads: 8'x8'. Room for a guest chair and quick one-on-one conversations without booking a room.
- Hybrid and rotating staff: bench seating. People who are in two or three days a week rarely need a dedicated cubicle.
Mixing sizes in one layout is normal. Keeping all stations in a pod the same size makes installation and future reconfiguration simpler.
Space-planning math
Here is how to estimate capacity yourself before you pay for a formal plan.
Step 1: Workstation zone per station
Picture a pod of 6'x6' stations placed back to back. Two rows are 12 feet deep. Add a 4-foot (48-inch) aisle that serves that pod and the next one, and each repeating module is 16 feet deep. Every 6 feet of width holds two stations, one on each side of the spine.
- Module area: 6 ft x 16 ft = 96 sq ft
- Stations in that module: 2
- Zone area per station: 96 / 2 = 48 sq ft
Real layouts lose some space at pod ends, columns and walls, so a planning range of 50-60 square feet per 6'x6' is realistic. The same method gives about 60-75 for a 6'x8', 85-100 for an 8'x8', and 25-35 per bench seat.
Step 2: Add main circulation
Main corridors connect pods to exits, restrooms, and support rooms. Plan on roughly 15-20% of your usable space for primary circulation, more on floors with an awkward shape or many columns.
Step 3: Add support space
Budget space for what every office needs regardless of headcount:
- Reception or entry: 120-200 sq ft
- Small conference room for 6-8: 150-250 sq ft
- Private office: 100-150 sq ft each
- Break room or kitchen: 150-300 sq ft
- Copy, storage and IT: 80-150 sq ft
Step 4: Check your total per person
Divide usable square feet by headcount. As rules of thumb, not code, an office built on bench seating runs about 80-110 square feet per person, a cubicle-based office about 110-175, and an office with many private offices 175-250 or more. If your number falls below the range for your layout type, the plan is probably too tight.

Aisles are where layouts fail inspections and where offices feel cramped. Build these numbers into your plan from the start.

Clear width means clear. Measure from the face of a panel, not the centerline, and remember that chairs, pedestals and trash bins push into aisles. A 36-inch aisle on paper often behaves like a 30-inch aisle once people are working.
For employee work areas, the general expectation is that people with disabilities can approach, enter and exit the area, and employers make reasonable accommodations for individual employees. Height-adjustable worksurfaces and a few larger stations near an accessible route make those accommodations easy later.

2,500 square feet
Reserve about 400 square feet for primary circulation, 200 for reception, 200 for a conference room, 130 for a private office, 150 for a break area and 100 for copy and storage. That leaves roughly 1,300 square feet of workstation zone. At 50-60 square feet per 6'x6', you fit about 21-26 stations in theory, but pod ends and walls usually bring it down to 16-18 in a clean layout. Total headcount: 17-19 including the private office.
5,000 square feet
With about 850 square feet of circulation and 1,450 for support rooms, you have roughly 2,700 square feet of zone. Twenty-eight 6'x6' stations use about 1,540, six 6'x8' stations about 405, and two 8'x8' stations about 185, totaling around 2,130 and leaving margin for pod ends and columns. That is 36 stations plus 2 private offices, or 38 people.
10,000 square feet
Plan about 1,700 square feet of circulation and 2,900 for support. The remaining 5,400 square feet of zone holds 54 standard stations (about 2,970), 10 large stations (about 675) and 8 manager stations (about 740), with room to spare for irregular geometry. That is 72 stations plus 4 private offices, or 76 people. Swapping some 6'x6' pods for bench seating could add 15-20 seats for hybrid staff.
Planning for hybrid attendance
If your team is not in the office every day, planning one dedicated cubicle per employee overbuilds the space. Size to realistic peak attendance instead.
- Count who is truly full time on site. Reception, operations, finance and on-site managers usually need assigned stations.
- Estimate peak hybrid attendance. Look at your busiest day of the week, not the average. If 30 hybrid staff peak at 20 in the office, plan for 20 seats plus a small buffer.
- Put hybrid staff on bench seating or shared 6'x6' stations. Bench seats use roughly half the zone space of a standard cubicle, so the savings add up quickly.
- Reinvest the saved space. Hybrid teams come in to meet, so swap some workstation area for huddle rooms, phone booths and a larger conference room.
A worked example: an office with 20 full-time staff and 30 hybrid staff peaking at 20 in the office could plan 20 standard 6'x6' stations (about 1,100 square feet of zone) plus 24 bench seats (about 720 square feet), instead of 50 cubicles (about 2,750 square feet). That frees roughly 900 square feet for meeting space or a smaller lease.
Keep in mind that storage moves with people. Hybrid staff at bench seats need lockers or shared storage somewhere, so reserve space for it in the support budget.
Common planning mistakes
- Planning to gross square footage. Your lease lists rentable square feet, which includes shared building areas. Plan to usable square feet.
- Ignoring columns. One badly placed column can remove a pair of stations. Measure them and mark them on the plan.
- Forgetting power and data locations. Powered panels need a feed point from a wall, floor or ceiling. Where the power comes in affects where pods can go.
- Squeezing aisles to add seats. Two extra stations are not worth a failed inspection or a floor people hate walking through.
- Planning only for today. Leave 10-15% room to grow, or choose a system you can reconfigure easily.
