The three heights we stock
We group panels into three working heights: low at about 42 inches, mid at about 53 inches and tall at about 65 inches. Manufacturers use slightly different numbers, so treat these as three families rather than exact specifications. In our instant quote builder, the height you pick applies to the whole station.

What each height does to sightlines
Sightline is the practical way to think about height, because it is what people notice. Seated eye height at a standard desk is roughly 44 to 50 inches off the floor depending on the person and the chair; standing eye height is roughly 58 to 70 inches. The three panel heights are built around those two ranges.
42 inches sits below seated eye height for most people. You see your neighbor's head and shoulders and can make eye contact without standing. That is the point. It suits floors where supervision matters, where a team talks constantly, or where anything taller would feel like a bunker.
53 inches sits above seated eye height for nearly everyone. Sitting down you see fabric, not faces; stand up and the floor opens back up. That is why it is the default: a seated person gets a workspace and a manager can still read the room from the aisle. Monitors are screened from neighboring stations, though not from someone walking behind you.
65 inches is above standing eye height for most, but not all, adults — somebody six foot two still looks over. What it reliably does is remove the accidental sightline: nobody sees your screen in passing, and people stop drifting into conversations they weren't part of. The cost is a maze. Wayfinding gets harder, interior stations lose light, and new hires take longer to learn who sits where.
Height also interacts with footprint. A 65-inch panel around a 5'x5' station feels like a closet; if you want tall panels, give people 6'x6' or larger. Our cubicle size guide covers that math.
Stack-on and glass-topped panels
You do not have to pick one height for the whole floor, and you do not have to buy a taller panel to get more height.
A stack-on is a short section that mounts on top of an existing panel, typically adding 6 to 15 inches. It is the standard way to take a mid-height run closer to tall for one team without re-buying panels. If you already own 53-inch panels and the finance group needs more separation, stack-ons are far cheaper than replacing the run.
A glass or acrylic topper is a stack-on in clear or frosted material. It raises the barrier while letting light through — the usual compromise when you need separation but the interior is already dark. Frosted and reeded glass blur the view without blocking daylight; clear glass gives almost no visual privacy but keeps papers and conversation from crossing the panel. Be honest about what glass does acoustically: it is hard and reflective, so it blocks a direct path but bounces sound back into the room. A floor with many glass toppers and a hard ceiling can end up louder, not quieter.
Daylight, supervision and the privacy trade-off
Every inch of panel height buys privacy and spends daylight. There is no way around it. What you can do is spend it where it matters least.
- Low panels along the window wall, taller toward the interior, so daylight travels deeper instead of stopping at the first row.
- Use height to zone, not to standardize. A floor can be 42 inches for sales, 53 for general staff and 65 for HR. Mixed heights in one system usually connect fine; confirm the hardware when you order.
- Watch the aisle-facing end panel. One tall end panel at the mouth of a run blocks most of the corridor view even when interior panels are shorter.
- If supervision is the real requirement, say so. Managers who need line of sight are better served by 42-inch panels and a seating plan.

Panel construction and how it handles sound
Most cubicle panels are a steel or aluminum frame with something inside and something on the outside. What is inside determines how the panel handles sound. What is outside determines how it looks and how easily it can be changed.
- Acoustic core with fabric tiles. The workhorse: a frame packed with mineral fiber or fiberglass batt, faced with fabric-wrapped tiles. Fabric is porous, so sound passes into the core and is partly absorbed rather than reflected. This is the only common construction that meaningfully reduces reflected noise, and it belongs on most of your panel area.
- Monolithic fabric. Same idea, fabric stretched over the full face instead of tiled. Cleaner look, no seams, but recovering means working the whole panel rather than swapping a tile.
- Laminate and veneer. Hard-faced, used on aisle sides and transaction tops for durability. Wipes clean, resists scuffs, and reflects sound. A little is fine; a floor faced entirely in laminate will be noticeably live.
- Markerboard. Useful in team areas and also a hard, flat, reflective surface. A functional choice, not an acoustic one — keep it to the faces where people write.
- Glass and acrylic. Blocks a direct path, reflects almost everything, absorbs almost nothing. Good for light, neutral to negative for room noise.
A typical build mixes them: acoustic fabric on the shared interior faces where people sit close together, laminate on high-traffic aisle ends, markerboard where a team asked for it, glass where daylight has to get through.
What acoustic ratings do and don't tell you
You will see two kinds of numbers quoted for panels, and they measure different things.
NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) describes how much sound a surface absorbs instead of reflecting, with higher meaning more absorptive. It tells you whether a panel will help calm a live room. It says nothing about what passes through.
STC (Sound Transmission Class) describes how much sound a barrier blocks from passing through it. Useful for walls. Close to meaningless for a cubicle panel, because the panel is open at the top — sound goes over, not through. A high-STC panel with a 53-inch top edge does not give you speech privacy.
Both come from a lab test on a single assembly, and your floor is not a lab. Ceiling height and material, flooring, window glass, HVAC noise, station density and how loudly people talk all move the result more than the gap between two similar panels. Use ratings to compare panels, not to predict how your office will sound.
Why panels alone rarely fix a noise complaint
When someone says the office is too loud, the instinct is to buy taller panels. They help a little and almost never solve it, because most of the sound is not crossing the panel — it goes up, hits a hard ceiling and comes back down two stations away.
A real fix usually needs three or four of these at once:
- The ceiling. The largest uninterrupted surface in the room. An absorptive acoustic tile ceiling does more for a noisy floor than any panel upgrade; a hard drywall or open-deck ceiling undoes good panels.
- The floor. Carpet or carpet tile absorbs footfall and reflection. Polished concrete looks great and makes rooms loud.
- Panel height and facing. Mid or tall panels with fabric acoustic faces on the shared sides. This is the part we supply.
- Sound masking. Low-level background sound tuned to the speech range, distributed evenly, so distant conversation stops being intelligible. Counterintuitive and effective. Specified by an acoustics contractor, not by us.
- Somewhere else to talk. Two or three small enclosed rooms or phone booths take the loudest conversations off the open floor — often the cheapest intervention per decibel.
- Zoning. Moving the sales pod away from accounting solves more than any product does.
If noise is your problem, we will tell you plainly that going from 53-inch to 65-inch panels alone will not fix it. We would rather quote the right panels and send you to an acoustics contractor for the ceiling and masking than sell a height upgrade that disappoints.
Re-tiling and re-fabricking used panels
Panel frames outlast fabric by decades. The frame is steel, the trim is aluminum, and the part that looks tired is a fabric face that can be replaced. That is why a refresh costs far less than people expect.
On a tile-based system, tiles pop off and new ones go on, so you can recover only the faces people see or only the stained and sun-faded ones. On a monolithic system it is a full recover, and the panel usually leaves the floor to get it done. Three situations where this is the right move:
- You are already reconfiguring. The panels are coming apart anyway; recovering them in the same project avoids a second disruption.
- You are moving. Recover during the relocation, when the furniture is off the floor.
- The layout works and the color doesn't. New fabric and trim reads as a new office for a fraction of a replacement.
Recovering is also what separates the grades. Liquidation-grade panels are sound and clean but keep their original fabric — in stock, installed in as little as 72 hours. Remanufactured panels are stripped, repainted and refabricked in the color you pick, which takes 7 to 14 days. New is 4 to 6 weeks. Per station the spread is small; across a floor it is real. Sixty liquidation-grade 6'x6' stations run about $35,040 at 42 inches, $36,900 at 53 inches and $39,840 at 65 inches — a $4,800 gap worth a conversation when only one department needs the height. For privacy from someone walking past on their feet, you need 65 inches, and even then a tall colleague can see over. Nothing in the 42 to 65 inch range gives you speech privacy on its own.
Do taller cubicle panels cost more?
Yes. Against our rate card, low 42-inch panels price at 0.95 of the listed station price, mid 53-inch at 1.00 and tall 65-inch at 1.08. On a 6'x6' liquidation-grade station at $615, that is about $584 low, $615 mid and $664 tall. The spread is small per station and real across 60 stations.
Do cubicle panels actually block noise?
They reduce it, but they do not stop it. A fabric acoustic panel absorbs some sound that hits it directly and blocks a line-of-sight path, which takes the edge off nearby conversation. Sound still travels over the top, around the ends and off a hard ceiling. Panels are one layer of a fix, not the whole fix.
Can you re-fabric used cubicle panels?
Yes. Most panel systems use tiles or stretched fabric over a frame, so the fabric can be replaced without replacing the panel. Re-tiling or re-fabricking is the cheapest way to make an existing floor look new, and it can be done in place or during a move. Ask us to quote it alongside your reconfiguration.
