Pre-owned for working from home

Used Home Office Furniture from Designer Brands

The chair and desk you use eight hours a day deserve better than a big-box bargain. Pre-owned designer furniture gets you commercial-grade comfort at home for much less than new.

Working from home changed what people expect from a home office. A dining chair was fine for a few weeks. Years later, sore backs and cramped kitchen-table setups have convinced a lot of people to get serious. The problem is price. New designer task chairs and height-adjustable desks cost a lot, and budget home furniture rarely holds up to full-time use.

Used home office furniture from commercial brands solves both problems. Chairs and desks from Herman Miller, Steelcase, Knoll, Haworth and Humanscale were built for all-day office use. Pre-owned, they cost far less than new and still have years of work left in them.

Why commercial furniture works at home

  • Built for eight-hour days. Commercial task chairs are designed for continuous daily use, not occasional sitting.
  • More adjustment. Seat depth, arm height and width, lumbar support and tilt tension let you fit the chair to your body.
  • Replaceable parts. Many commercial chairs use components like casters, arm pads and cylinders that can be swapped rather than tossing the whole chair.
  • Serviceable designs. Well-known commercial models are widely used, which tends to make replacement parts and service easier to find.

Choosing a pre-owned task chair

The chair is the most important purchase in a home office. Spend your budget here first.

Fit before brand

A famous model that does not fit your body is the wrong chair. Pay attention to seat depth, since short-legged sitters need a shallower seat, and to how low and high the seat goes relative to your desk.

Test every adjustment

On any used chair, work each lever and knob. The seat should hold its height without sinking. Tilt should lock and release cleanly. Arms should move and stay put.

Look at wear points

Check the seat edge, arm pads and casters. Mesh should be taut with no tears or sagging. Upholstery should be free of rips at the seams.

Choosing a desk for a home office

Commercial desks come in more shapes than most people expect. The right one depends on the room and how you work.

  • Height-adjustable desks let you switch between sitting and standing. Test the full range of travel, and on electric models listen for grinding and confirm both legs move evenly.
  • Freestanding rectangular desks suit smaller rooms and are the easiest to move.
  • L-shaped desks and returns give room for a second monitor, paperwork or a printer, but need a corner and more floor space.
  • Pedestals and storage keep files out of sight, which matters when your office is also a guest room.

What the condition grades mean for home use

  • Grade A, like new. Little to no visible wear. A good fit if your office doubles as a room guests see or if you appear on video often.
  • Grade B, very good. Light signs of use. The sweet spot for most home offices.
  • Grade C, good. Structurally sound with more visible wear. Best value when function matters more than looks.

Office Station is an independent reseller, not an authorized dealer, and manufacturer warranties generally do not transfer to pre-owned furniture. The grade is your clearest picture of what you are getting.

Home office setup checklist

  • Room dimensions, plus window and outlet locations
  • Doorway, stairway and hallway measurements along the delivery path
  • Your seated height needs and whether you want to stand
  • Number of monitors and whether you need a monitor arm
  • Storage for files, supplies or equipment
  • How visible the office is on video calls
  • Budget split, with the chair funded first

Frequently asked questions

Do you sell to individuals, or only businesses?

Tell us what you need and where you are. We will let you know what is available and what delivery or freight looks like for your address. Greater Phoenix delivery is $195 central or $295 metro, and freight elsewhere is quoted per project, so small orders farther away may not be cost effective.

Is a used designer chair better than a new budget chair?

Often, yes. Commercial task chairs are built for heavy daily use and usually offer more adjustment than budget home chairs. A Grade A or B pre-owned chair from a major brand can outlast and outperform an inexpensive new one. Check the condition grade and test the adjustments for your body.

Will the manufacturer warranty cover a pre-owned chair?

Generally no. Office Station is an independent reseller, not an authorized dealer, and manufacturer warranties generally do not transfer to pre-owned furniture. We grade every piece A like new, B very good or C good so you know the condition up front.

Will commercial furniture fit in my home?

Measure first. Commercial desks and returns can be larger than residential furniture, and some pieces are heavy. Check doorways, stairways and hallway turns along the delivery path, plus the room itself, before you order.

How quickly can I get a chair or desk?

In-stock liquidation-grade furniture can be ready in as little as 72 hours. Remanufactured product usually takes 7 to 14 days and new furniture runs 4 to 6 weeks. We confirm availability for the specific piece when you ask.
