What to check on a used metal desk
- Drawer slides. Pull every drawer all the way out. It should glide, stay level and close fully.
- File drawer hardware. If you need hanging files, check for file rails or bars in the deep drawer.
- Frame squareness. Set the desk on a flat floor and check for rocking. A bent leg or twisted frame is more serious than any scratch.
- Leveling glides. Missing glides scratch floors and cause wobble. They are inexpensive but worth noting.
- Top condition. Laminate tops can chip at the edges or delaminate. Metal tops can dent. Decide which cosmetic issues you can live with.
- Rust. Surface marks on steel stored in dry climates are rare, but look underneath and on the feet anyway.
