Start with the equipment, not the desk

Before you compare desks, list what each seat needs to hold. Different roles in the same office often need different setups.

• Multi-screen roles: finance, dispatch, design and support teams often run three monitors or wide screens.

Sizing a computer desk for monitors

Screens should sit about an arm's length away, with the top of the display at or slightly below eye level. That distance is what drives desk depth.

If an existing floor plan forces shallower desks, dual monitor arms are usually the fix. They clamp to the back edge and let each person push screens back or pull them forward.

Cable management that holds up

Loose cables are the most common complaint about computer desks, and they are a trip and snag risk. Good cable management has three parts.

A way through the surface

Grommets or a flip-up power access door let cords reach the top without hanging off the edge. On used desks, confirm the grommet caps are present.

A path under the surface

Cable trays, baskets or raceways hold power strips and excess cable off the floor. Many can be added after purchase if a desk lacks them.

A path to the building

Power and data have to come from somewhere: a wall, a floor core or a power pole. On panel-based workstations, the panels themselves can carry power. This is electrical work, and it is not included in furniture pricing, so plan it with your electrician early.

Ergonomics at the computer desk

A comfortable computer seat depends on the desk, the chair and the screen working together.

• Surface height. Standard fixed desks sit around 29 to 30 inches. Shorter and taller people often need a keyboard tray or an adjustable desk to keep elbows near 90 degrees.
• Sit-stand options. Height-adjustable desks let people change posture during the day and fit a wider range of body sizes.
• Keyboard trays. An articulating tray can lower the keyboard below a fixed desk height and add adjustability for less than a new desk.
• Chairs. The chair sets the eye height and arm position. Pair your desks with pre-owned office chairs that adjust in seat height, depth and arm height.
• Lighting and glare. Place screens perpendicular to windows when you can, which cuts glare without blinds drawn all day.

For workstation-style computer desks, Office Station publishes clear pricing. A 6 by 6 foot workstation, furniture only, costs:

Volume pricing applies to larger orders: 5% off at 20 or more stations, 8% off at 50 or more and 12% off at 100 or more. Prices exclude electrical, delivery and professional installation.

• Installation: $95 per workstation, with a $495 minimum.
• Greater Phoenix delivery: $195 central or $295 metro.
• Everywhere else: freight is quoted per project, nationwide.

As an example, a 50-seat liquidation-grade rollout at $615 per station is $30,750 before the 8% discount, which brings furniture to $28,290. Installation for 50 stations adds $4,750, plus delivery and any electrical work.

Rollout checklist for used computer desks

1. Count seats by role and list the equipment each role needs.
2. Choose desk depth and width from the monitor setup, not from habit.
3. Decide which seats need sit-stand or keyboard trays.
4. Confirm all units in the order share the same finish and condition grade.
5. Map power and data sources with your electrician.
6. Build and test one pilot seat.
7. Schedule delivery and installation around move-in, including dock and elevator access.
8. Label each desk with its seat number so equipment lands in the right place.
