Size the table to the room, not the other way around
Conference tables are the piece most often bought too big. A table that looks right in a catalog can leave no room to push back a chair once the meeting is full. Start with the room.
- Measure the room. Record length and width, plus doors, windows, columns and any built-in credenza.
- Subtract clearance. Leave enough space on every side for a person to sit with the chair pushed back and for someone else to walk behind. Plan more clearance on the side with the door.
- Set the seat count. Allow roughly 30 inches of table edge per person for comfortable seating.
- Place the screen. If one end holds a display, keep that end clear of chairs and check that everyone can see it without twisting.
- Find the power. Note where floor boxes or outlets are. The table's power module should line up with them.

Plan for the technology
Most meetings now include a laptop, a display or a video call. The table has to support that without cables sprawled across the top.
- Power and data modules. Flip-up or pop-up modules keep outlets at the table. Confirm the module type and that it works before buying a pre-owned table.
- Cable management. Look for cable troughs under the top and a path down through the base to the floor.
- Camera sightlines. For video calls, boat and tapered tables help the camera see every seat.
- Electrical. Our prices exclude electrical work. If the table needs a new floor box, plan it before installation day.

Add seating from pre-owned office chairs, since the table only works if the chairs fit under it.
