What a reception desk actually has to do
A reception desk is part furniture and part workstation. It needs to look right from the lobby side and work hard from the staff side. Before you look at finishes, get clear on the job the desk has to do.
- Greet and check in. A transaction counter at standing height lets visitors sign in or hand over paperwork without leaning over a work surface.
- Hide the clutter. The front panel, or modesty panel, should screen monitors, cables, phones and personal items from view.
- Support real work. Your receptionist may spend a full shift here. That means a seated work surface at the right height, room for a monitor, and storage within reach.
- Stay accessible. Plan for a lowered counter section so a visitor using a wheelchair can be served comfortably. Confirm the exact requirements with your architect or building owner.
Common reception desk configurations
Most reception desks fall into a handful of shapes. The right one depends on your lobby footprint and how many people staff the front.
| Configuration | Best for | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Straight desk with transaction counter | Small lobbies, one receptionist | Limited surface area; add a return if staff need more room |
| L-shaped desk | One staff member who needs a second work surface | Which side the return sits on affects traffic flow |
| U-shaped desk | A busy front desk with heavy paperwork | Needs a deeper footprint and a clear entry path behind |
| Two-station or extended desk | Medical, legal and corporate lobbies with two staff | Power and data at both positions |
| Curved or feature desk | Brand-forward entries | Harder to find pre-owned in matching sizes; longer lead time new |
New vs. pre-owned reception desks
You do not have to choose between a brand-new desk and a tired secondhand one. Office Station sources reception furniture across three tiers so you can match the desk to your budget and move-in date.
Liquidation-grade
Desks recovered from corporate office projects and sold as they are, with a condition grade. This is the fastest option. When we have a match in stock, it can be ready in as little as 72 hours. Selection depends on what is available, so it works best when your dimensions are flexible.
Remanufactured
Pre-owned furniture that has been refurbished, which can include new surfaces or panel refreshes. Remanufactured pieces usually take 7-14 days. This is a good middle ground when you want a like-new look without the new-furniture lead time.
New
New desks give you the full range of sizes, finishes and configurations. Expect lead times of 4-6 weeks. Choose new when your lobby needs an exact size or a specific finish to match the rest of the space.
Plan the lobby before you pick the desk
The most common reception desk mistake is buying a desk that fits the room on paper but crowds the entry in real life. Our space planning is free, and it starts with a few measurements.
- Measure the lobby. Note wall lengths, ceiling features and any columns.
- Mark doors and sightlines. The receptionist should see the entry door. Visitors should see the desk as soon as they walk in.
- Locate power and data. Floor boxes and wall outlets often decide where the desk can go. Our prices exclude electrical work, so plan any new circuits with your electrician early.
- Leave circulation space. Keep a clear path behind the desk for staff and in front for visitors and guest seating.
- Think about what comes next. If you are also adding workstations or conference furniture, planning the whole floor at once keeps finishes consistent.
What to check on a pre-owned reception desk
If you are considering a liquidation-grade or remanufactured desk, walk through this list before you commit.
- Transaction counter edges free of chips, deep scratches or peeling laminate
- Front and side panels straight, with no cracks at joints or corners
- Grommets and cable pathways intact, so cords stay hidden
- All connecting hardware included for sectional or modular desks
- Pedestals and drawers that open smoothly, with keys if they lock
- Finish that works with your existing lobby seating and flooring
- Overall dimensions confirmed against your plan, not just the listing
Delivery and installation pricing

Furniture prices exclude electrical, delivery and professional installation, so you will see each line separately. If your front desk is part of a larger buildout, pair it with used cubicles or pre-owned office chairs so everything arrives on one schedule. You can browse more of our pre-owned office furniture as well.
Replacing an old reception desk
If you are updating a lobby, the old desk has to go somewhere. When the change is part of a bigger move or closure, our office furniture liquidation service gives you a written net offer: the resale value of your furniture minus the removal cost. If that number is positive, we pay you.

Frequently asked questions
Do you sell new reception desks or only used ones?
Both. We source new reception desks with typical lead times of 4-6 weeks, and pre-owned desks from designer lines in liquidation-grade or remanufactured condition. We can help you compare the options side by side for your budget and timeline.
Will a pre-owned reception desk come with a manufacturer warranty?
Generally no. Office Station is an independent reseller, not an authorized dealer, and manufacturer warranties generally do not transfer to pre-owned furniture. Every pre-owned piece is condition graded A, B or C so you know what you are getting before you commit.
Can you help me figure out what size reception desk fits my lobby?
Yes. Space planning is free. Send us your lobby dimensions, door locations and how many people will staff the desk, and we will lay out options that keep walkways clear and leave room for guest seating.
What does installation cost?
Installation for workstation furniture is $95 per workstation with a $495 minimum. Reception desks are quoted with your project because size and configuration vary so much, and prices exclude electrical work. We give you the full number in writing before anything is scheduled.
How is delivery priced?
In Greater Phoenix, delivery is $195 for central zones and $295 for the wider metro. Outside Greater Phoenix, freight is quoted per project anywhere in the country.
