If you are shopping for new office chairs, you are probably comparing sticker prices across a few models. The better comparison is new versus pre-owned designer chairs. The same commercial chairs that sell new also come back onto the market when companies downsize or move, and some of those are in excellent shape. This page lays out when new is worth it, when pre-owned is the better buy, and what to check either way.
New vs pre-owned designer chairs, side by side
| Factor | New chairs | Pre-owned designer chairs |
|---|---|---|
| Warranty | Full manufacturer warranty from an authorized source | Manufacturer warranties generally do not transfer |
| Specs | Choose fabric, color, arms, lumbar and size | Choose from what is available |
| Condition | Factory new | Graded A like new, B very good, C good |
| Lead time | Typically 4 to 6 weeks | Liquidation-grade in stock in as little as 72 hours; remanufactured usually 7 to 14 days |
| Matching quantities | Any quantity in one finish | Depends on what came out of a single space |
| Cost | Highest | Lower, with price tied to grade and model |
The honest truth about warranty transfer
This is the point most people skip, so we will be direct. Office Station sells pre-owned designer chairs from brands like Herman Miller, Steelcase, Knoll, Haworth, Humanscale, Teknion, Allsteel, Kimball, AIS and Friant as an independent reseller. We are not an authorized dealer for those manufacturers.
That matters because manufacturer warranties generally do not transfer to pre-owned furniture. A premium chair may carry a long warranty when bought new from an authorized source, but when you buy that same chair pre-owned, you should assume that warranty does not come with it.
What you get instead is a lower price and a condition grade that tells you exactly what shape the chair is in. For many offices, the savings more than cover the occasional replacement part. For others, especially organizations with procurement rules that require warranty coverage, new is the right call.
When new office chairs make sense
- You need warranty coverage. Policy, insurance or long-term cost planning calls for it.
- You need exact specs. A brand-standard fabric, a specific color, or a particular arm and lumbar package.
- You need a big matching order. Fifty identical chairs in one finish is simple new and hit-or-miss pre-owned.
- A user has specific ergonomic needs. Seat depth, size or support that has to be fitted precisely.
- Your timeline allows it. Four to six weeks works for your move-in date.
When pre-owned designer chairs make sense
- You want top-tier ergonomics on a budget. A Grade A or B designer task chair gives people full adjustability for less than new.
- You need chairs fast. In-stock pieces can move in as little as 72 hours.
- You are furnishing secondary spaces. Conference rooms, training rooms and hoteling desks.
- You are growing unpredictably. Lower cost per seat lowers the risk of buying ahead of headcount.

What to check on any office chair
New or pre-owned, sit in the chair or have someone on your team test these points:
- Seat height. Feet flat on the floor with thighs roughly level at your desk height.
- Seat depth. A few fingers of space between the seat edge and the back of the knee.
- Lumbar support. Adjustable, and it lands at the curve of the lower back.
- Tilt and tension. The recline feels controlled, and the tension adjusts for different body weights.
- Arms. They adjust low enough to slide under the desk and high enough to support the forearms.
- Base and casters. The chair rolls smoothly and the casters suit your floor surface.
For pre-owned chairs, add these:
- The gas cylinder holds height without sinking over a few minutes.
- Every lever and knob works through its full range.
- Mesh or fabric has no tears, sagging or stains beyond what the grade describes.
- The backrest does not wobble or click under load.
Buying chairs with workstations
Chairs are easier to plan alongside the desks they serve. If you are pricing used cubicles or new workstations, add seating to the same plan so arm heights clear work surfaces and keyboard trays. For reference, a 6'x6' workstation runs $615 liquidation-grade, $1,245 remanufactured and $1,920 new, furniture only. Prices exclude electrical, delivery and professional installation.
Workstation installation is $95 per station with a $495 minimum. In Greater Phoenix, delivery is $195 for central zones and $295 for the wider metro; elsewhere nationwide, freight is quoted per project. Space planning is free.

Frequently asked questions
Does the manufacturer warranty transfer on a pre-owned designer chair?
Generally no. Office Station is an independent reseller, not an authorized dealer, and manufacturer warranties generally do not transfer to pre-owned furniture. If a transferable warranty is a requirement for your organization, buy that chair new.
What do the condition grades mean on pre-owned chairs?
Grade A is like new, Grade B is very good with light signs of use, and Grade C is good with visible wear but full function. For task chairs people sit in all day, most buyers choose A or B.
How long do new office chairs take compared with pre-owned?
New furniture typically takes 4 to 6 weeks. Liquidation-grade pieces in stock can move in as little as 72 hours, and remanufactured furniture usually takes 7 to 14 days.
When is a new chair the better choice?
Buy new when you need a transferable warranty, a specific fabric or color, a large matching quantity, or an adjustment package that is not available pre-owned. New also makes sense for users with specific ergonomic needs that call for exact sizing.
Can I buy chairs along with workstations?
Yes. Many offices price chairs with used cubicles or new workstations in one plan. Space planning is free, and workstation installation is $95 per station with a $495 minimum.
