Sizing the room
Measure before you shop. For a comfortable private office, plan for:
- About 3 feet between the desk edge and the credenza or wall behind you, so the chair can roll back.
- About 3 feet in front of the desk for guest chairs.
- Clear door swing, plus room to walk around one end of the desk.
- Outlet and data locations near where the monitor will sit.
A smaller office often works best with a compact L-shape and two armless guest chairs. A larger office can take a U-shape plus a small round table. When in doubt, send dimensions and get a free layout before committing.

What to check before you buy
- Surface material: wood veneer can sometimes be refinished, while laminate is tougher but harder to repair if chipped.
- Edge banding: look for lifting or chips along the front edge.
- Drawer slides: open every drawer fully. It should glide and close without catching.
- Locks and keys: confirm keys are included or that locks can be re-cored.
- Chair mechanism: test tilt, tilt lock, seat height and arm adjustments.
- Upholstery: check seams, seat foam and any stains on the front edge.
- Stability: press on the desk corners. A wobble can mean a loose connector or missing hardware.
