Buying used office furniture is not a gamble when you know the vocabulary. Most of the confusion comes from three things: what a condition grade actually promises, how liquidation-grade differs from remanufactured, and what happens to the warranty. Get those straight and you can make a clear decision about where to save and where to spend.
Why used office furniture makes sense
Commercial office furniture is built to last far longer than the average office lease. When a company downsizes, relocates or closes a floor, workstations, chairs and storage that still have years of use left come out of the building. That supply is where used furniture comes from.
The practical benefits are lower cost, shorter lead times and furniture that is already proven in a real office. The trade-offs are limited choice at any given moment and the loss of manufacturer warranty coverage. Both trade-offs are manageable if you plan for them.
Condition grades A, B and C
A condition grade tells you how a piece looks and has been used, so you can match it to where it will go.
- Grade A, like new. Minimal to no visible wear. Suits executive offices, reception areas and anywhere clients will see it.
- Grade B, very good. Light signs of use you notice up close, fully functional. Suits most open-plan work areas.
- Grade C, good. Visible cosmetic wear such as scuffs or faded finishes, still sound and functional. Suits back offices, call centers, warehouses and training rooms.
A useful rule: spend on grade where people see the furniture, and save where they do not. A Grade C lateral file in a storage room works exactly as well as a Grade A one.
Liquidation vs remanufactured vs new

How to choose a tier
- Deadline under two weeks? Liquidation-grade is usually the only tier that fits, and remanufactured may work if you have about two weeks.
- Need a uniform look across a large floor? Remanufactured or new gives you more consistency than mixing liquidation lots.
- Tight budget and a back-office team? Liquidation-grade delivers the most workstations per dollar.
- Specific finish, fabric or configuration required? New gives you full control, at the longest lead time.
Many offices mix tiers: new or remanufactured in client-facing areas, liquidation-grade everywhere else.

Warranty realities
This is the part many sellers gloss over, so here it is directly. Manufacturer warranties generally do not transfer to pre-owned furniture. That is true whether the piece carries a Herman Miller, Steelcase, Knoll, Haworth, Humanscale, Teknion, Allsteel, Kimball, AIS or Friant label.

What to check when furniture arrives
- Chairs. Test height adjustment, tilt lock, armrests and casters. Sit for a minute and feel for sagging seats or mesh.
- Workstations. Confirm panel connectors, worksurface brackets and any power components you expect are present.
- Storage. Open every drawer, test interlocks and check for keys.
- Counts and finishes. Match the delivery against your quote, including colors and sizes.
- Grade consistency. Pieces should reflect the grade you purchased.

- Furniture. Use the tier prices above, then apply volume pricing: 5% at 20 or more workstations, 8% at 50 or more, 12% at 100 or more.
- Delivery. Greater Phoenix is $195 central or $295 metro. Elsewhere nationwide, freight is quoted per project.
- Installation. $95 per workstation with a $495 minimum.
- Electrical. Not included. Coordinate with your electrician or building if workstations need powered panels.
- Space planning. Free, and worth using before you commit to a count.
Example: 50 liquidation-grade 6x6 workstations at $615 is $30,750, less 8% volume pricing for $28,290. Installation adds $4,750 and central Phoenix delivery adds $195, before electrical.
